Felting needles are actually made for industrial machinery that work on products like housing insulation, car upholserty felt, craft felt fabric and so on. It wasn't until the 80s that the Japanese came up with the idea of needlefelting. This is why needles have a hooked end, the hook is what fits the needles into the industrial tools.
You will also often find that they come with a fine layer of machine oil, this is to avoid abrasion and rusting through the industrial process... unless this in excess (which can be wiped) it won't damage your work.
