So I hand the reins of this post over to Valery...
I started spinning and weaving a couple of years ago and opened my Etsy shop last May specialising in small wall hangings using wool that I spin myself. I like using merino tops to spin with as I find them easy to spin, but I also use natural wools such as Shetland, Jacobs, Cheviot and Gotland. Each type of fleece presents its own challenge, all part of the fun of spinning.
I get my inspiration from nature either by the sea, out in the countryside or in my own garden. This hanging was inspired by the various shades of green in the pots of herbs I have growing in my garden hence the title of the hanging ‘Herb Garden’.
I have used dyed merino wool tops for the weft and incorporated some tapestry weaving techniques in my design. Half way through the hanging I inverted the colours and patterning to create a mirror effect.
In complete contrast I wove ‘Seaweed’ in simple horizontal stripes using the colours of the merino tops to create the effect rather than using tapestry weaving techniques. This hanging was inspired by a photo I took when on holiday on Islay.
I was standing on a beach staring at the seaweed and realised that there were a lot more colours than just the greys or greens that we would normally associate with seaweed. And if you don’t believe me have a look at my Etsy shop at the ‘Seaweed’ hanging as I have also posted a copy of the photo!
