I'm an avid reader of blogs, when I get the chance... it's almost like an on-line gallery of people's crafty inspiration and personal techniques... a great way to get ideas on colour texture too. I love that the creative community share in that way.
Yesterday I got an email alert from one of my favourite blogs... A Pair and A Spare DIY with their new blog post DIY INSPO: DENIM RUG.
I love the idea of recreating from the things I have around me that are no longer loved or in use. I don't have jeans at the moment... well actually that's a lie, I might have one pair I could use. Hmmm... that's another idea brewing. I wonder if I could repurpose the jeans to make a yarn to knit or crochet with??
What I do have in abundance are older T-shirts. D and I often share out T-shirts. we both have a very similar taste in colour and T-shirt imagery, so I know I could re'love' those unworn T-shirts... but what to make? Initially I thought of knitting totes but my worry is that knitting might stretch too much... what about crochet?
This is a nice crochet pattern I found on Ravelry; Home for the Weekend Tote. It could be a great alternative, as crochet will definitely make a more structured fabric. The pattern also links to a tutorial for creating T-shirt yarn. I'm going to bookmark the tutorial and have a go... The T-shirts are destined for the bin otherwise, as the many holes in them void their charitable worth (my usual route for unworn clothes). In the coming months I hope to have a go.
With this project already in mind for a few months I picked up a cone of hot pink Hooplayarn back at Fibre East. The beauty of buying this yarn is that it is laser cut from one solid colour of t-shirt jersey, making is a great way to balance what I am thinking will be almost 'variegated' yarn from my pile of image T-shirts.
I'm excited to try something out and expand my horizons... do send me a link if you have worked on something similar, I'd love to see how you found working with t-shirt yarn.
