February's Yade Sale

We had a bit of rain, so went from outside in the yard to the hallway.

Unfortunately the shed was too damp. Still the rain didn't stop customers arriving full of fibre chatter... Thank you Ladies!

My handdyed yarns and Limited Edition fibre blends (new for the shows) did well. As did my new line of handdyed silk, bamboo and tencel tops, which was fab news! Needless to say I now have lots more dye work to do, but will get what I have listed on the website as soon as I can.

Bye for now,

Merry Go Around: What are your top 5 favorite tools that you use in your art/craft?

I guess I have a few tools that I use regularly, whether I'm spinning, or felting for me or for stock. Here is my top 5;

I love my drum carder! It's where I create art yarn batts (rolags) for spinners and creative fibres for feltmakers (BATTS and BLENDS SHOP).

It's also where I create batts just for me. At the moment I am working on a Handspun Necklace (Ravelry Link), which I hope to have finished to wear to my first big show in April.

Spinning became quite a big thing for me a few years ago, when I got my first spindle... the act of creating yarn from scratch, just had me enthralled and since then I haven't stopped! I always make far more yarn than I can ever use, so now I have started selling skeins when I can... STC Handspun.

For this I use two wheels, my Ashford joy and the Kiwi. At the moment the Kiwi is my favourite of the two.

Where it all began! I still go back to my spindles, even though the wheel is quicker... why? Well, because it's slower I have found the technique to spinning much finer yarns. It's also great for experimenting... at the moment I have a yarn I am plying with cotton and beads.

I've also got a bit of a collection 'habit' going on too, as I'm gathering more and more different types!

The niddy noddy is how I skein my yarns for sale... an essential bit of kit! It's also quite a nice tool for working out how long your yarn is.

If I'm felting these days it's needle felting, so a good stock of needles is essential. I have a range of different gauges that do different jobs. I keep them next to my wool and a foam pad, just in case I feel the need to start on something new.

Feb 27th Yard Sale Prep

I'm still dyeing fibre and new yarns, hoping that some will dry in time.

But that's the problem with February... Damp and cold! So instead for the yard sale I'm concerntrating on my new range of 'Bigga Batts' (all will be revealed in dye course). This will be an exclusive to the yard sale.

Depending on what's left and how good the light is will determine how quickly they make it to the website thereafter.

Sara's Texture Crafts 2011 Show Demos

Limited Edition Carded Batts for Spinning or Felt making at
www.sarastexturecrafts.com/userimages/Batts--Limited-Edition
Show Demos are always difficult to prepare for... what do I make, or show this year that will inspire? Also (with my business hat on), what will help sales at shows?

For the last few years I've centred on needle felting... it's quick easy to show and if you can have a larger project on the go that 'wows', then it's been an nice demo for me to do.

This year I want to do something different and something that leads onto some of the new products I will be showing (not that felting has left me completely you understand!) So here's my plan;
  • Smaller Shows - spindle/wheel spinning
  • Larger Shows - Drum Carding for art yarns.
I'm particularly excited about the Drum Carding, as I will have a host of new products which are great for inclusions... to find out more, sign up to my newsletter at http://www.sarastexturecrafts.com/CLUB-Members(1798585).htm I'll be updating you there on these new products as they happen.

Club Members will also be open to related Show offers, so do sign up and do check out your closest event at http://www.sarastexturecrafts.com/Shows-Events-and-Workshops(1918824).htm

Progressions.

So I wanted to follow on from my compass words post, which stemmed from my new year 2011 plan. I felt like I gave you just the beginning of a story/problem, without any indication of moves and changes so far. So here I am, not sure I have lots to say until I start writing, but let's see how I'm getting on!

Well, I have looked long and hard about what works and what doesn't and I have started to trim away at the edges of these. I'm having a SALE and hunting for new suppliers, two of which I already took the plunge and started working with. So this I hope starts to address my immediate product needs. Meanwhile I am also looking at ways to revamp some of what I sell, which could do better. I've found that being busy often means tasks like this get put on the back-burner... 2011 is now time to sit down and address this properly.

I always dye my hands as well!
D has been on at me for ages to get back to hand crafting and dyeing fibres, something which although I do a little here and there I have also bought in from other suppliers (and relied on this heavily when busy). One of my hand dye suppliers is no more, as of this year and as I already started to do a lot more of my own work last year, this seems like the perfect time to move on with this and create the kinds of products that I know some of my customers would love to see and to-date I've not been able to provide. It's going to mean readdressing my schedule and restructuring the use of my time, but I think it's possible. It will also give me the oppourtunity to create my own identity, something that bought in products can hide. I am creative and can be so, so why not use that as part of my selling point? Losing the essence of this makes me very much a retailer and there are a lot of 'big boys' that I can't compete with in that area.

I'm still carding and spinning my own yarns too... the problem of course is how much can you fit into one day! So the truth is while I will try to keep the website fully loaded with unique pieces, like batts and handspuns I know that I will spend most of the time on these products prepping for show stock. The downside (well down side for customers) is that the stock can disappear at shows (thank you fibre addicts), so I have little left over to restock the site with. Commissions... possible in some areas, but of course dependant on time again.

Sunset Merino Blend and Rose Merino
at http://www.sarastexturecrafts.com/
I have also been working on the idea of being more community focused... Devon has a large crafting community and I guess like most locals up and down the country; they try to buy locally. I felt this was something I was missing out on being a 'just on-line' company. So I've applied for the local farmer's market (I will continue my yard sales too... oh how I'd love to have a shop!) and joined the new Spinning group. Not just as a way to sell, but also a way of bring more focus to hand craft skills in the local area and also, if I'm honest to meet people/fellow artists locally! We are in our second year living here and because we both work so hard, we don't get out and about much to meet new people... I/We want to change that. With this in mind I have relooked at my initial show schedule for the year and have made a tweak or two. Not all of the shows I planned to do were possible, so I have planned to do the ones I think will be best for me and will be good attractions for the customers I know do travel to say 'Hi'... (your fibre addiction can be a heart warming thing, especially when I see your smiley faces and get hear about your latest projects!)

I'm also following up on publicity leads where I can, which is something I'm terrible at... and need to work on! I'm hoping as I get more into my own creations I'll be able to approach journalists and groups about articles and the like.

I'm learning daily, thank you to the enormous support of my customers and crafty friends, that I really should be more confident in my abilities... and I guess that's slowly sinking in. I still have days where I'm just not sure about things, but then... Rome wasn't built in a day and I don't want to run the risk of complacency! The important break through is that I'm hearing you and it's from these conversations that I learn a little more about what you want and what you need for your work.

D and I have talked about more balance in our lives over the last year, especially as business seems to grow more demanding (not that same as being bigger). This as ever is harder to be successful at, but I've found a new sense of strictness with myself, since my operation and I think it's paid off to an extent. I still spin, knit or felt while we relax together, but I'm one of those 'can't stop or I'll fall over' people anyway... but the main thing is that at least we are finding some time... a little more than before and I think we are benfiting from that.

...phew, I had more to say than I thought I did! Reading it back I feel much more positive that I'm moving in the right direction... it's going to still take some work and of course national/global economics is always going to hamper me this year... but I do feel better for having a plan!

Customer Photos: DreamwoodArt's Needlefelt Sculptures

Sharon, who run's DreamwoodArt is an uber talented needlefelter... just look at these wonderful dog sculptures! Sharon's website bio, gives us a clue to her passions and inspiration;
Hello, I am an fiber artist and Fine Art graduate who loves to study and create miniature animals and pets. I create custom pet sculptures made with a labor intense technique of needle felting usually with wool roving or natural fibers from plants.

I strive for realism with a touch of whimsical which is inspired by children's illustration which I very much enjoy such artists as Garth Williams and Beatrice Potter.

You can view some of my creations on my personal website at www.dreamwoodart.com

Pia's Spinning Lleyn Batts

Pia's Spinning.

I'm always looking for Pia's email in my inbox... her work is always so beautiful. It's also incredibly interesting to see how she uses the fibre she buys from me.

Here Pia is using my Sunrise Lleyn Batts to spin yarn that she may use in one of the workshops she will attend this Spring. I love the way she has captured the essence of sunshine and can't wait to see what she makes... I could do with some sunshine!

Prepping for my February Yard Sale.

I started with empty boxes and the aim is to fill them with new stock just for the sale.

The plan is to give customers something new to be excited about. That's not to say you can't ask for anything you've seen on the website while you are here!

So I'm busy spinning, hand dyeing and carding.

I'm using some new and existing fibres and hope that some of what I will show, covers what I've been asked for these past few months, but not been able to produce thus far.

Yard Sale - 27th Feb 10-1pm. See website for details.

Charity Knitting: Knit for Needs

I recently came across this blog... http://knitsforneeds.blogspot.com/. I thought it might be of interest... it's American based, but I know that many of my readers are from over the pond and there might be some of you here who'd like to have a go anyway. I contacted the owner, Meridith and here's what she has to tell us about the organisation;

Knits For Needs is a charity that is based in Atlanta, GA, but is made up of people all across the United States. We collect hand-knit/crocheted items and donate to people in need throughout the US. We donate directly to the people in need by sending our items directly to hospitals, homeless shelters, food banks, etc. We have donated to the homeless, veterans, preemies, cancer patients and other hospital patients, battered women, accident victims, and anyone else we know of that is in need of something warm. In 2010, we collected 1,070 items and our goal for 2011 is to collect and donate 1,500 items. We accept any and all hand-knit and crocheted items and 100% of items get into the hands of those who need them. This is an ongoing project and we collect items year-round. Our current goal is to register as a 501(c)3 non-profit and we expect to be going forth with this in a couple months.

Knits For Needs was created by Meridith Zelaya in January, 2009. I (Meridith), love to knit and I love to give to others, plus I don't like to sit around and hope for change in the world, I wanted to actually DO something, so I created Knits For Needs.

Anyone wanting to become involved with Knits For Needs can do so in a number of ways. We are on Ravelry and Facebook as "Knits For Needs" and we're on Twitter as @knitsforneeds. Our blog is the best way to keep up with what we're doing: http://knitsforneeds.blogspot.com/ As mentioned previously, we accept any and all hand-knit and crocheted items that anyone wants to donate. We also accept monetary donations and appreciate them very much. Anyone wanting to donate can do so on our blog, or simply send a US check to the address below. We did accept yarn donations, but we're overloaded with yarn now, so we are not accepting any yarn at this time.
