I recently came across this blog... http://knitsforneeds.blogspot.com/. I thought it might be of interest... it's American based, but I know that many of my readers are from over the pond and there might be some of you here who'd like to have a go anyway. I contacted the owner, Meridith and here's what she has to tell us about the organisation;

Knits For Needs is a charity that is based in Atlanta, GA, but is made up of people all across the United States. We collect hand-knit/crocheted items and donate to people in need throughout the US. We donate directly to the people in need by sending our items directly to hospitals, homeless shelters, food banks, etc. We have donated to the homeless, veterans, preemies, cancer patients and other hospital patients, battered women, accident victims, and anyone else we know of that is in need of something warm. In 2010, we collected 1,070 items and our goal for 2011 is to collect and donate 1,500 items. We accept any and all hand-knit and crocheted items and 100% of items get into the hands of those who need them. This is an ongoing project and we collect items year-round. Our current goal is to register as a 501(c)3 non-profit and we expect to be going forth with this in a couple months.
If you can knit, please do take part! This is a wonderful project and would be lovely to be a part of.
Knits For Needs was created by Meridith Zelaya in January, 2009. I (Meridith), love to knit and I love to give to others, plus I don't like to sit around and hope for change in the world, I wanted to actually DO something, so I created Knits For Needs.
Anyone wanting to become involved with Knits For Needs can do so in a number of ways. We are on Ravelry and Facebook as "Knits For Needs" and we're on Twitter as @knitsforneeds. Our blog is the best way to keep up with what we're doing: http://knitsforneeds.blogspot.com/ As mentioned previously, we accept any and all hand-knit and crocheted items that anyone wants to donate. We also accept monetary donations and appreciate them very much. Anyone wanting to donate can do so on our blog, or simply send a US check to the address below. We did accept yarn donations, but we're overloaded with yarn now, so we are not accepting any yarn at this time.
