Merry go Around: Failure Sucks, but Instructs!

Our topic this month is 'Failure Sucks, but Instructs!'
I wasn't sure if I wanted to reflect on things I'd failed at first, hey come on... would you?! But of course everyone has had that moment when something you tried failed and it cut straight through to your core. But no matter how brief a moment it was, it's never a truly bad thing if you can pick yourself up and learn from it and that's how I look at things these days. Obviously there is a difference between the things that really went badly wrong and smaller mistakes, but in basic principle the lesson is the same... it's the details that make it bigger!

In business, yes I've made a few mistakes sure who hasn't... like the first time you have a package go missing (which is very rare, but can happen)... the first time you dealt with this, did you do everything as you do it now? No, probably not... my refund/exchange/lost package service has been modified countless times over the last 3 years, like most small businesses and now I hope I have most bases covered... although I'm sure something new will pop up in the future, inevitable it will.

There's also the time you invest in stock you think will do well, but it doesn't budge for ages, or you do a private order and forget to calculate your costs correctly... or you get fancy with a formula in your stock spread sheet and then weeks later find that it doesn't quiet calculate what you thought you were asking it to and you spend hours trying to sort it out! Or what about the time you make a decision on colour theme for the season and find that your customers don't quite like that shade of orange red... 'Can you do it more pinky red?' Or what about showing at a show someone invited you to show at... flattered, you accept... research shows it's borderline your 'thing', but you take a chance and pay out and later realise that the show just wasn't right for your product after all! Yes, come on admit it every small business (and even some big businesses) make these mistakes... I think that's why they call it a learning curve, not quite the same sting and FAILURE!!

I think my biggest mistake as a small business was paying a joining fee to sell on a shopping platform, on the promise of how they were planning to lead the site, which was a much more handmade feel than it is now (mass produced boutique product)... yes I fell for a sales pitch! At the time my handmade items were going well and so looking at the site as it was then, I thought there was the prospect of selling... maybe less than on other sites, but at least enough to recover my costs. I signed up and weeks later found that the site dramatically changed in the opposite direction and the fees had gone up! Tied into a contract I could do nothing, but notch it up to experience... a much bigger lesson learned! Ignore the sales pitch, if they want you bad enough they will wait for you to do a few months of research into their site... and hey, with so many platforms not asking for a joining fee... why are they?!

So yes, failure sucks, but it should also instruct... that's what keeps us moving in the right direction.

Closing my Not on the High Street Shop...

It's a bit of a shame really, but to be honest I just don't have the time for it right now... everything was made to order, so it took a lot of time. My supply shops are doing well (in fact taking off) and so I need to concentrate my time there... get that carding machine out and create some new special runs for Christmas and beyond. I also need to keep up with my customers, some are starting their own businesses... so I need to keep on top of things for their supply. I'm quite chuffed with that really, it's nice to feel part of something... you know?!

That's not to say I will stop making my handmade items altogether though... it's just for now I need to recentre myself and wear my supply hat. Keep an eye out for me though as there will be lots of exciting things happening over the next 3-4 months.

My personal piece for the International Day of Felt

Excuse how windswept I look, it was quite cold back on October 3rd... the International Day of Felt. I just wanted to show you my personal Day of Felt piece... the butterfly.

The butterfly can be worn as both a brooch or a hair pin.

My orginal idea was to make something based on nature, so I tunred to one of the textile books I love the most...

Title: The Art of Annemieke Mein, Wildlife Artist and Textiles
Published by Search press
Year: 2001
ISBN: 0-85532-977-7
RRP: £15.00/ $30 US Dollars

I love Annemeike's work, it's so inspirational and accurate. Her stitch detail is as beautiful as her drawings and I always find something else to be awestruck by each time I pick it up.

These pictures are from the same book. Below is my felted butterfly... not technically accurate, bold and colourful none the less.

Playing with colour in Spinning

I did a little more spinning, this time I wanted to play with colour as well as keep an eye on those spinning tensions. Here they are;

This is some hand dyed Merino, using a new all-in-one dye stuff which I will be selling shortly.
This is a commercially printed roving, which was printed in a space dye effect... again Merino.

This is my own hand dyed Merino, dyed using the Acid dye sets that I sell (I also do these exact colours in my kit at http://www.sarastexturecrafts.com/)

I loved watching the colour pull from my hand and spin through the flyer to make a single yarn on my wheel.
I just need to skein them now!

Knitting with my set yarn...

I used my biggest needles... size 15mm, as the singles were really quite chunky in places and I was thinking that it would help me to see how consistent I had been with my spinning... or not!

Now the green and pink and you remember was spun on my spindle, while the other two were on my wheel... all of which are Merino from my range.

The drop spindle spinning, well let's say was patch! But the lesson learned was about drafting... I need to make sure I draft evenly... maybe trying this draft, spin and park technique??

The other two pieces were much more consistent, if a little over spun in a few places... this made the ply twists work in odd ways, often with the central strand tight and the second ply working around it, instead of an even/equal ply twist. Again a lesson learned here about plying equally... but maybe a tensioned lazy kate might help?

This is all good stuff... learning loads and really enjoying it!
