Sara's Relocation: Found somewhere!

Yep, we found somewhere to rent this past weekend. Yipee!

2 up, 2 down situation, which is fine... there is only 2 of us!! But what's really great is that we have a small patch of dirt out the back, which is large enough for a small kitchen garden... something I've wanted for a while. I couldn't really take any photos, beacause at this stage we are still waiting for all of the reference checks and admin to be done. I'm just hoping that they come through quickly, as we need to move in mid May really.

More news soon... Sx

Sara's Relocation: I spotted a few cottages...

I didn't think we'd get anything like a cottage in our price range. I thought we'd be stuck in another flat, but there does appear to be a few we could see. Small I'm sure but one does have a garden... I'm calling the agents now...

Sara's Relocation: Pangs of Longing...

No idea why, but today I woke up listing the places I'll miss (in London) in my head... Well actually I do. I had to say my first face to face goodbye yesterday. I've known my hairdresser for about 12 years now, so she's really a family friend to me and D. She's been through all of the crazy fashion student haircuts and been the driving force behind some of the colour choices too... more than that she's been a mate to confide in and support when things have been tough for us. I couldn't help but cry when I got home!

I'm sure it's only natural to get these pangs of longing... I was born and bred in South London you see, until my parents moved to Devon when I was 17. I absolutely hated it there, then at least... I really missed the nightlife and friends I had in London you see. I guess I had trouble fitting in in the small village my parents chose, so it was only a few years later that I came back to London to go to University, with D in tow (we met at art college, which was the only real redeeming feature of my time in Devon). We've now been here 13 years! And together for 14...

So why are you moving back you say? Well, in truth it wasn't Devon we craved when we decided to move away... it was green space. It's only the last 5 years that we started discussing our real future life together and decided on a greener life style. Before that we sort of drifted... careers took over and we both lived in the moment, no future plans... I guess that's what happens. When Granddad died last year, I knew it was really time to concerntrate on our future, before our real future became our past.

So why Devon, then? Why not somewhere else? With both our families down there, it did seem like the easiest and quickest route to getting to our dream future... so D started the transfer process back in January and now in mid April we have the confirmation through. We are not planning to live in the same places, as we did before... new place, new adventure is what we need. I'm just hoping that we can find somewhere a little bigger than our one bed flat... I'll let you know how we go...

Sara's Relocation: Check lists, phone calls and packing!

Phew, what a couple of weeks it's been!

Phone calls, phone calls and more phone calls trying to find not only a place to live in, but also van prices and updating accounts. It always amazes me just how many people you need to tell when you relocate... most of whom you actually, really don't know that well! Still not really much more I can do in this department until we have a new address confirmed... still working on that. D starts work soon, so we can't take too long.

We are mostly packed now, so just waiting... the final few bits will be packed a few days before. Then there's the shop stuff... hmmm, most of it should be pretty easy to move, but it does look like it's going to be quite a late night the night before. Just trying to work out how much time to take out... don't really want to close the shops for that long.

My lists of things to do have taken over a bit too... now I know I'm a bit anal about my 'being organised', but this list does seem unusually long and I can't fight the feeling that there's something pretty big I'm missing. D is convinced there will be something and of course I know he's right, I just hope it's nothing too important!

So any advice, bloggy friends? What would you recommend I don't forget in the move?!

Press: Craft Gossip pick up my felting video... How to make a felted ball.

Thank you very much to Linda of Craft Gossip who has picked up my How to make a felted ball video tutorial by Sara of Sara’s Texture Crafts posted on You Tube... wonderful words in the article and it's definitely spurred me on to get cracking on that 'to do' tutorial list, once I get settled in Devon.

Thanks Linda!

Yay... remote email posting works!

...aha... apart from the hotmail ads at the bottom of my text, this remote blogging lark does actually work!

Ok, now we have lift off... I'll post my relocating story as and when I can.
See you soon,
Sxx

Quick Test post to see if I can really remote blog!!

Testing, testing, 1..2...1...2

If I seem quiet, it will be because I am relocating!

Yay, at last I have had some great news... D's transfer to Devon has finally come up, so as we speak I'm working hard at finding somewhere to live. It will mean I'll be quiet here... not much blogging for me... packing instead, but hey that's ok... I can deal with that!

I have found that I can email blog post... no idea whether it will work, but I'll give it a go... maybe there's a way I can remote blog pictures from my phone too?? Have to look into it, that way you can catch up with the move.

Don't worry my shops are still open, I intend to only take a few days out... so you can keep buying as you would usually and I'll keep you up to date regarding shipping dates and am hoping to have only very minor delays in dispatch.

Customer Photos: Carol's Wonderful Felted Scarves

I'm always in awe of other feltmakers' work... each artist's inspiration and hand style is so different... it always gives me something new to think about!

The wet felted scarves pictured below are contributions from one of my best fibre customers, Carol. Aren't they stunning!

Carol's creations come about, in part by playing with her fibre selections... Carol picks a colour, changes her mind and then proceeds at will... Not a bad technique, I often employ this one myself!

Carol has mastered her technique by trial and error, like most of us and more interestingly has used the internet to find her way around new techniques, rather than traditional classes.

'I gleaned the information from library books and a youtube video after seeing some lovely pieces on the internet.

I lay down a sheet of bubble wrap which can be used as a template and place the fibres down vertically and put another layer at a 45 degree angle, mixing the colours as I go, cover the section in a nylon based piece of material and using a sponge soak the area with olive oil soapy water, agitate the surface for a few minutes, peel back the cloth and agitate a little more, sometimes I use hot water, other times not, I may rub the soap into the surface a little too if I want to carry on with the felting process if I have added extra pieces after peeling away the nylon cloth. Once felted if you use wet hands to add extra pieces for definition and texture you can achieve a tail like effect. Roll up the bubble wrap and felt into a Swiss roll, secured with rubber bands or tie up. Roll it backwards and forwards approximately 200 times (I cheat, 150 maybe... Sara says... 'hey, so do I!'). Gently unwrap and fold and then drop onto the work surface about 20 times. Rinse in cold water. Sometimes it's necessary to go back if some areas are a little thin or some extra texture or another feature needs to be added, circles or flowers for instance. I have tried unsuccessfully to wet felt onto a silk scarf but these scarves are what I did manage to produce!'

Thank you Carol for sharing your work... They are wonderful. I can't wait to see what you create next!

Needlefelt Kits for Beginners!

I’ve been working away at trying to ignite new passions amongst my customers, for my favourite felt craft needle felting. So I decided to work on some new kits aimed at the very first attempts of a layman. I think it is incredibly important to offer learning facilities for those new crafters, so I’ve come up with two kits.

Firstly Level 1 – Basic Flat Felt Shapes concentrating on initial needle technique and developing shape. Then there is Level 2 – Basic 3-D Shapes, which is aimed as the very next step offering a tutorial for a basic figure/creature.
Each kit comes with; a relevant foam pad, a set of needles, 100g of mixed Merino colours and a sheet of instructions.

Please visit my shop at http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Saras-Texture-Crafts to grab yours!

Instructions are sold separately too!

A Beginner's Guide to Fibre/fiber selection - Part 3

Corriedale Fleece in roving form.

The Corriedale sheep have a lovely soft, pure white fleece with a great handle for the spinner and produces a very nice soft yarn. This wool is also very suited to wet and dry needle felting, because it is not quite so 'super' soft as Merino and it felts up easily. The Correidale sheep has been bred over time from a combination of Lincoln and English Leicester rams on Merino ewes, so the wool has a wonderful quality to it and a good lustre. It also takes to chemical and hand dying well.

You will find a wide range of colours in my store on eBay.

Originally bred for its ability to live in the wetter parts of New Zealand and Australia, the Corriedale sheep is a sturdy animal, but what also occurred in this breeding was a wonderfully strong and long staple fibre.

Count 25-28 micron, Bradford 56-58Staple 10 - 17cm

Learning something new: Space Dyeing Wool in the microwave!

In the corner of the kitchen sits a fibre junkie, with a fibre dying book in one hand, a note pad and pen in the other... a strange daze has come across her, but she seems happy enough... no doubt planning what shade she will be dyeing her hands today!

Using water to mix her 'all-in-one' acid dyes, she starts by creating a 'paste', or concentrated liquid form of her chosen colour... although she notes that she didn't have a plastic spoon which was recommended in that book.

She pays no mind... time to get started on that Merino! She dilutes the dye further, ready for 'injection'... it's a controlled experiment you know, lol!

After trying with the syringe to inject colour into her fibre, she decides to slightly wet the fibre and draw the dye along the length of the fibre with a soft, flat brush... not forgetting to write her findings down as she went.

She microwaves the fibre that has been wrapped in clingfilm for 10 minutes as recommended and sets aside to cool... There's more vigorous writing in the note pad, before she begins the rinsing.

She uses only a 'little' soft detergent to catch the stray dye and wash it from the Merino, rinsing with tepid water to finish...

And sets with her other experiments to dry.
Now it's just a waiting game...
