Today's feature is a fun one for our final run up to Christmas... Pulp Sushi!
1. Tell me a bit about your background and how long you have been an artist/crafter.
I was born and raised in New York City. I grew up in a creative household. My father was a musician/painter and I remember him having wacky ideas about decorating and use of color. My brother became a musician. I tried my hand in music but it didn’t work. A lot of my friends are artist/musicians and I would be jealous of their creative outlets while I felt dull and plain. That all changed when I discovered photography in junior high school. Over the years I wanted to pick up more traits. I love to put things together but I don’t think I can create from scratch with my hands like draw, paint, sculpt, or even sewing which is a shame because I would love to learn how to knit.
About six years ago, I came across a tutorial about marble magnets and that’s what led me down the Craft path. It started with magnets, stationery, photography, and now jewelry, buttons and hair accessories.
2. Where do you find your inspiration?
I love low-brow art like Shag, Coop, and Mitch O’Connell. I also love classic pinup, sailor jerry, and cute-spooky art. One of my favorite comic books is "Lenore". I just find humor in darker things I guess. That’s why I even though I have flowers in some of my items, I also love using skulls. I hope I can go even more in that direction as Pulp Sushi grows. I definitely like the use of bold colors to stand out.
3. Do you sell your work?
I enjoy selling my work! I started at Etsy (http://pulpsushi.etsy.com/) and that is where I really grew as a craftster. I have also made a couple of transactions through MySpace too. Right now I’m looking for consignments with other businesses. Currently, I have some items available at Hey Pretty Cupcake (http://www.heyprettycupcake.com/) and marble magnets at Kiss My Style (http://www.kissmystyle.com/).
You can also find me at http://dawanda.com/shop/pulpsushi
4. You mentioned that you sell on DaWanda. How did you find out about the site and how long have you been selling there?
I joined DaWanda in the Summer of 2007 after learning about it on IndiePublic. After a year with Etsy, I wanted to branch out into other markets, especially in other countries. Some sellers are afraid to ship international thinking it will be too expensive but you’ll be surprised how cheap it can be. There is a whole other market that can be tapped into and DaWanda has a great set-up and look about it.
5. Tell me a bit about your current DaWanda collection.
My latest is a sushi charm bracelet, which I just love. You can’t have a shop named Pulp Sushi without sushi items. The sushi beads are polymer clay and made by a fellow Etsy seller.
Missy Skull necklace is just really cute and what I mean by taking something ‘spooky’ and make something cute out it. It has a Dia De Los Muertos feel to it that was unintentional.
Pop over and check out the Pulp Sushi shops!
